Unique Stationery for a Traditional Garden Wedding in Rwanda

Alice and Armin's multicultural wedding celebrations spanned two countries and seven days.

The couple had two weddings in February 2020. The first is a garden wedding surrounded by 350 guests in Kigali, Rwanda. Their second took place six days later with 160 guests in Livingstone, Zambia.

Wanting unique stationery that was the opposite of the usual romantic traditional style, I chose to incorporate cultural graphic elements and handpainted vistas into the stationery designs. Working with a wide range of themes to tie in with the multitude of unique events, I created a range of stationery that is some of my very best creative work to date.

Today I am sharing with you the first of Alice and Armin's weddings in Kigali, Rwanda.

The guests' first glimpse of the wedding celebrations was the save the date. Alice wanted to incorporate a nod to her home country of Rwanda and as the couple love gorillas, we decided to incorporate one into the save the date.

I have always loved the work of Robert John Thornton and so I used his painting - Cupid Inspiring Plants with Love from The Temple of Flora (1807) as a backdrop to the save the date. I replaced Cupid with the gorilla and overlayed it with text. When choosing the font I have vintage travel books in mind and I found the perfect font for the theme. After several rounds of proofs, they were printed in a gloss finish to enhance the colours and give a beautiful crisp result. Certainly, my absolute favourite save the date - to date!

The invitation featured a nod to both Alice & Armin's heritages. Printed in a soft sheen and with simple but luxurious envelopes. The stationery for Alice & Armin was all about quality and bold design rather than adding embellishments for impact.

Armin created the signs for the event with the graphics I designed for the invitation as a backdrop and had them printed in Rwanda. I love how the couple were so involved in the creative process.

Creative Director and Planner, Mwai from Love From Mwai along with her team produced some of the most beautiful and unique florals I have seen to date. I also adore all of the extra details she incorporated into the garden - especially the wonderful seating area filled with traditional details and colour.
